Honored by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the Cayman Islands, Mrs. Basdeo (or Ms. Joy) , MBE JP, Civil Registrar of Marriages, as she is known to us today is a woman who has had a tremendous career in our civil service holding many top position titles, she is the mother of some of Caymans' bright young minds, she is the daughter of the Caymanian education stalwart Mr. Vernon Jackson remembered by many as a driver in Cayman's education system and last but not least she is the wife of Mr. Sam Basdeo, the founding President of our very own University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI). Joy shares her history of growing up in the Cayman Islands when times were different, when opportunities were abound, when woman were encouraged to further their education, where men of valor ruled the upper posts, when the people mattered. When Cayman was on the rise and the woman rose with it. Mrs. Basdeo's journey to the top and after, her life as a civil servant did she stop there, did she lay down and die? Mrs. Basdeo; the epitome of the strength of a woman.
