Kerry Tibbetts – A Bond That Never Dies “The Human Spirit”: In a time when the HIV virus broke in the Cayman Islands, the country was left scrambling, afraid, uneducated…it was new…deadly and it left a community afraid looking for answers… and those who were listed on the HIV positive list were ostracized… they were avoided at all cost, their careers suffered, their lives meant no more to us, they were of no more value or worth…and when they died their clothes were burnt…and their memories erased from our lives the same way…burnt and cast aside like the ashes of a fire.
But, not only did we, as a community, shun the persons, we also left the families to fight on their own, struggling to find a way to survive within our society, to find the will to live - to live down the shame, the embarrassment, that came with the stigma of “her /his, son; her/his brother, has Aids, the HIV virus”.
Today Betsy Lazzri-Solomon speaks with Kerry Tibbetts once such person who has lived that life first hand. Kerry speaks of her early years, growing up in the ‘Brac’ and moving to Grand Cayman at the age of nine. Of her older brother who was diagnosed and died of the HIV virus in the early 1990s and what it was like living in a family dealing with such an illness.
Kerry’s heartfelt story teaches us that the bond between family is stronger than anything and that love can overcome any obstacle in the way…and that sometimes the human spirit can endure anything so long as there is love, friendship and the help of family… And no matter what the circumstance the Human spirit can survive…and that an individual will grow stronger as a result….
