Heart Talk with Steve McField (Healthcare and Medical Facilities: one medicine for All ailments) - Part9

June 30th, 2015

One (1) Medicine for "All ilments": Cayman Islanders lived a simple life in the 50s and 60s. Medical Insurance and Healthcare was virtually unheard of.  The Cayman Islands still a dependency of Jamaica up to this point received medical doctors such as Dr. Rose and Dr. Hortor, who came on medical tours for periods of up to six months. Their Primary Duties were riding throughout the districts on horseback to facilitate the mid-wives in delivering babies and to distribute medicine.

Though Cayman was not a bustling community at the time with First Class Medical Services the people lived simple lives and ate mostly from the sea, which to all appearances provided a much healthier life-stytle that many is said "accounted for longer life spans and less illnesses".

Cayman boosted a small 4 bedroom hospital which now sits the Headquarters of our Immigration Building.

Hear Mr. McField talk of the time when there was an outbreak of typhoid in Cayman and how it was treated as we saw the loss of Caymanian Life.
