The second largest of the three Cayman Islands, Cayman Brac -- or 'the Brac' -- has the most varied and dramatic terrain. It has a population of approximately 2,000 people, with a surface area of 15 square miles (39 square kilometres); it is approximately 12 miles (19.31 kilometres) long by 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometres) wide. It has a striking limestone cliff or bluff ('Brac' is Gaelic for 'Bluff') running through its centre, rising to 140 feet (42.67 metres) above sea level. It was the prominence of this bluff that allowed Cayman Brac to be the first of the Cayman Islands sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503.
