Cayman Approach | Behind The Scenes of Air Traffic Control

Welcome to Air Traffic Control in the Cayman Islands!

Who are Air Traffic Controllers? Specialists only see the problems within their field, just like a pilot in a single plane. They are important, but it’s impossible to expect them to take in the big picture of the whole airport with dozens of other departments in it, all interacting with one another. Air Traffic Controllers step back and integrate all the information to make sure that all units work together synergistically and that the airport as a whole functions optimally.

Discover the principles behind Air Traffic Control in the Cayman Islands as we take you behind the scenes at Owen Roberts International. Most of us have come to Grand Cayman via some form of air travel, but few may have realized the important role played by ATC in your safe arrival here.

Prepare for a better understanding of the efforts made by less than a dozen highly skilled individuals, every single day of the year.

Highlighted features include;

- Aerodrome Inspections
- Air Traffic Control Co-Ordination with adjacent ATC units
- Air Traffic Control Clearances
- Qualities possessed by all Air Traffic Controllers worldwide
- A glimpse at aircraft separation and how it is applied by Procedural Air Traffic Controllers
- The Cayman Islands area of control and responsibility
- Flight Strips and their purpose in the Control Tower
- Annual Refresher Training
- Insight in to deviations and the effect of weather on Air Traffic
- Local Wildlife Hazards
- Overview of ATC responsibilities
